So Kobe Bryant is deflecting questions about whether or not he will opt out of his final two years on his contract July 1st. What does this mean? Does it mean that Kobe Bryant might actually leave Los Angles? Perhaps, but I do not forsee that happening personally.
Kobe has stated that he wants both Lamar Odom and Trevor Ariza back in a Laker's uniform next season. Look at this from this perspective, if Kobe really wants to keep the team intact as it is, then he can opt out and resign a longer deal for less money. What does this do? It leaves the Lakers enough money to sign both Odom and Ariza to multiple year deals.
Don't get it twisted, Kobe deserves to be paid like he is one of the best two players in the world, but it also appears that Kobe really is about the basketball. He has been in the league for 13 years now, I am sure he is just fine financially. Kobe is a throwback type of player that is worried about his legacy more so than the money now. I mean he's been a multi-millionaire since he signed that first contract as a 17 year old kid. I wander if his parents had to co-sign that first contract?
Then again, maybe I am giving Kobe too much credit here. Maybe he does just want to recieve a larger contract than his current one. Who could blame him if this were true? He has help bring 4 championships to L.A. in his 13 years. We'll see how it plays out in the coming months of the off season.
