Attrition: Who'll be left standing?

>> Tuesday, May 12, 2009

Just a few months ago people were worried about an outward flux of players from the Kentucky roster. Amazingly, Coach Calipari has transformed the situation into an overstock of new and old. Following the commitment of several 5-star prospects, one 4 star, the return of Patrick Pattersion, the inevitable return of Jodie Meeks and a possible commitment by John Wall in the future...attrition will have to take place.

Prior to the firing of Billy Gillispie the roster appeared to be headed for shambles.

Seniors
Perry Stevenson
Ramon Harris
Michael Porter-Most Likely would have left the team for personal reasons.
Jodie Meeks-Most likely would have left for the draft.
Mark Krebs-Walk On
Matt Scherbenske-Walk On
Kevin Galloway
Dwight Perry-Walk On

Juniors
Patrick Patterson-Most Likely would have left for the draft.
Matthew Pilgrim
A.J. Stewart-Probable transfer.
Joshua Harrellson

Sophmores
Darius Miller-Possible transfer.
Landon Slone-Walk On.
Adam Delph-Walk On.
Mark Halsell-Walk On.
Donald Williams
DeAndre Liggins-Definite transfer.

Freshmen
Daniel Orton
G.J. Vilarino
John Hood
Konner Tucker

The roster, most likely, would have been left in shambles. A team without very much talent. A team lucky to win 12-15 games.

Fast forward two short months and enter one of the best recruiters in the game, John Calipari.

Calipari has transformed the roster in two months into a young, talented, elite team with several veteran leaders. However, there are only 13 scholarships available...

Who makes the cut? According to several sources, seniors are guaranteed a spot if they choose to stay. The rest is truly an unknown.

As the roster now stands:

Seniors
Perry Stevenson
Ramon Harris
Michael Porter
Jodie Meeks
Mark Krebs
Matt Scherbenske
Kevin Galloway
Dwight Perry

Juniors
Patrick Patterson
Matthew Pilgrim
A.J. Stewart
Joshua Harrellson

Sophmores
Darius Miller
Landon Slone
Adam Delph
Mark Halsell
Donald Williams
DeAndre Liggins
Darnell Dodson

Freshmen
Demarcus Cousins
John Hood
Daniel Orton
Eric Bledsoe
John Wall (Probable)

That is a ton of players and how Calipari shakes out the roster will be an interesting concept.

Starting with the walk-ons. Calipari only has two walk-ons on his roster...compared to the 476 that Gillispie allowed in practice. Krebs and Dwight Perry are the two walk-on's that are most likely to remain. Landon Slone, Scherbenske, Adam Delph and Mark Halsell will be shown the door leaving you with 20 remaining players.

With the seniors, Michael Porter has already chosen to leave the team for personal reasons and move on with his life. A smart choice for the hard playing PG. Porter was a lightning rod for criticism and did all he could but was put in a position that was over his head. Ramon Harris, Perry Stevenson and Kevin Galloway will most likely remain with the team and the majority expect Jodie Meeks to return for this senior season following NBA Workouts. That leaves Calipari with 19 players.

The junior class is where the fun begins. As reported, Patterson has removed his name from the draft and will, of course, be in the starting lineup. A.J. Stewart, Josh Harrellson and the "Great Unknown," Matt Pilgrim remain. It is widely assumed A.J. Stewart will be transferring at the end of the year and may not have his grades in order. Josh Harrellson, although, he wants to be a part of the UK roster may be shown the door. I feel sorry for Josh, because he seems like a great kid and a hard worker, but he fits the DDM like Cosmo Kramer making jokes in a club in Gary, Indiana. Pilgrim, has been rumored by Matt Jones to possibly be on the chopping block. We'll assume he stays and that leaves us with 17 players.

Finally, the sophmores. Darius Miller will excel in this system and become a star by his junior year. It's rumored that Donald Williams has already left the team and his "one-year" scholarship offered by Gillispie will not be renewed. DeAndre Liggins is a topic of much criticism. An excellent athlete with a sub-par basketball IQ, Liggins is rumored to have academic issues and there is a high probability he will be the last casualty on the roster. The roster sits pretty at 15 players.

If all plays out as above...the final roster will consist of the below players.

Perry Stevenson
Ramon Harris
Kevin Galloway
Mark Krebs-Walk On
Dwight Perry-Walk On
Jodie Meeks
Patrick Patterson
Matt Pilgrim
Darius Miller
Demarcus Cousins
John Hood
Daniel Orton
Eric Bledsoe
Darnell Dodson
John Wall (Probable)

Elite 8/Final Four talent, indeed.

An amazing transformation for a team headed for last place in the SEC East.

Roger, Roger, Roger...

Stop. Hush.

Nobody cares about you anymore. You have as much credibility as Perez Hilton at a Deja Vu boobie bar.

Everyone knows you were washed up as a Boston Red Sock and went to the juice to rejuvenate you're struggling body and career. Sure, you were super successful. You were dominating the game like the 24 year old Rocket.

However, we all know these stats are tainted. It's time to admit the truth. Stop the charade. Next thing we know you will be giving the Sammy Sosa response, "No hablo ingl├ęs."

Nobody believes you, not even Joe Torre:

"There's a side of Roger that makes you want to hug him," Torre added. "He's been that guy that everyone's paid attention to and nobody's ever questioned, so it may be a point in time where that has to sort of run out the hourglass."

Do what's best for the sports world...

Admit the truth or disappear into the abyss like Mark McGwire.
