Craaazy Judicial System...

>> Wednesday, June 17, 2009

So yesterday I blogged about Donte' Stallworth only recieving 30 days of jail time for killing a 59 year old man. I thought it was ridiculous no matter if the family agreed with the terms of the conviction or not. So today I read that a former baseball outfielder by the name of Mel Hall was convicted today of raping a 12 year old girl and recieved a sentence of 45 years.

Now, I am by no means advocating rape is okay. I believe that Mel Hall got exactly what he deserved, but I can't help but compare it to the Stallworth fiasco though in some sense. Mostly because it is two pro sports figures and their sentences came out right around the same time. So, if Mel Hall raped a young girl and got 45 years then shouldn't Stallworth have recieved a little more than 30 days?

In reality, none of this has to do with me and I'm just spouting off my opinions because of boredom. Is it football season yet? Until, then my posts are going to be completely random and hopefully not always dealing with the judicial system.

Old School Athlete Tribute...O.J. Simpson

In honor of the 15 year anniversary of the White Bronco Chase, we dedicate our Old School Athlete Tribute to none other than Orenthal James "O.J." Simpson. While most remember "The Juice" for his moronic post career crimes, he was truly one of the best athletes to ever lace up the cleats.

Simpson chose to attend the University of Southern California after a two year JUCO stint at The City College of San Francisco and put up more than spectacular numbers. During his junior campaign, The Juice ran for over 1,400 yards and followed that up with an amazing senior season. While a senior at USC, Simpson compiled an impressive stat line 1,709 yards on 355 carries and earned the honor of hoisting the Heisman Trophy.

Simpson was drafted third by the Buffalo Bills and began to rewrite the history books. Simpson was the first running back to ever compile a 2,000 yard season and did so with a 14 game schedule. During his record breaking 1973 season Simpson rushed for 2003 yards and scored 12 touchdowns. Simpson now sits 17th on the all-time rushing list with 11,236 yards and was awarded with 6 Pro Bowl appearances.

Following his illustrious NFL career, Simpson and his charismatic personality began to earn him roles on the movie screen. He's most well-known for his paraplegic character in The Naked Gun trilogy and his short stint's on Monday Night Football and NFL on NBC.

Then in 1994 everything changed for O.J. and his reputation became something Selena Roberts would have loved to write about.

Everyone knows the story of Ronald Goldman and Nicole Brown and the trial that eventually transpired. The power of money and Johnny Cochran's brilliant, "If the Glove Doesn't Fit," speech helped save Simpson's freedom, but his reputation and pocket book were never the same.

Simpson mostly disappeared from the spotlight until the Vegas robbery fiasco several years ago. Simpson, while armed, broke into a hotel room and stole goods that he claimed, "Belonged to him!" However, there was no Johnny Cochran to save the day this time and Simpson was sentenced to 33 years in prison for his involvement in the armed robbery.

Once known as "The Juice," Simpson now attempts to revel in a life behind bars. A dramatic fifteen year fall from grace for the former heisman trophy winner and 2,000 yard rusher.
